Tasting Notes

  • Colour:
  • Nose: Notes of sweet confectionery introduce this dram, with turkish delight, pear drops and marzipan apparent on the nose. There are hints of subtle peat smoke, like toasted marshmallows by a campfire.
  • Palate: Initially zesty with citrus notes of lemon cheesecake and an oiliness typical of a Campbeltown whisky. Peat smoke, leather bound books and peppery, spicy notes develop over time, along with sweet sticky toffee pudding.
  • Finish: The peat smoke carries through to the finish in campfire embers, with sweet hints of pecan pie and butterscotch.

About the Distillery

Kilkerran Whisky is made at the Glengyle Distillery, which was founded by William Mitchell in 1872, and like the majority of Campbeltown distilleries, Glengyle suffered greatly during the economic downturn at the beginning of the 20th century. After this hardship, the distillery bought by West Highland Malt Distilleries Ltd in 1919 then sold again in 1924 for the princely sum of £300, before production finally ceased altogether in 1925. The entire spirit stock from the Glengyle Distillery was auctioned off on the 8th of April that same year.

Despite no longer being used for the production of spirit, the distillery buildings remained in relatively constant and greatly varied use, right up to modern days. In the 1920’s the buildings housed the Campbeltown Miniature Rifle Club and later the buildings were used as the headquarters of an agricultural company—and so it remained the best preserved of all the former Campbeltown distilleries.

In November 2000, some 75 years after Glengyle had last produced spirit, it was announced that the buildings would return to the Mitchell family—and also return to their original use—under the stewardship of Mitchell’s Glengyle Ltd, headed by Mr Hedley Wright, chairman of J&A Mitchell and Co Ltd, and great-great nephew of the original founder of Glengyle, William Mitchell.

Mitchell’s Glengyle Ltd are very proud to be continuing and adding to the great Campbeltown distilling tradition. The choice of name Kilkkeran also follows the naming traditions of Campbeltown malts, as it was unusual for the old Campbeltown distilleries to be called after a Glen, a custom more usually associated with the Speyside region.
